American River College [ARC] is the largest of four community colleges in Sacramento, California. ARC students who are disabled are provided academic counseling and assistance through Disabled Student Programs and Services [DSPS]. During the author's internship at the DSPS, it was discovered there was a lack of training for tutors of students who had disabilities. Even when students meet the eligibility requirements to become tutors, they may not be aware of a specific tech-nique or material that might help the students who are disabled. This project is the development of a handbook designed for students, students who tutor students who have disabilities, and other individuals concerned with the education of students who have disabilities. Providing this handbook to tutors before they begin tutoring new students will have a positive effect on student learning. This approach will help new tutors better understand the abilities and limitations of students with disabilities, and will make the tutors more effective, yielding a deeper level of comprehension and enhanced academic performance by the students with disabilities. |
