Title: Therapists' use of dialectical behavior therapy with adolescents
Author: Hernandez, America; Weagraff, Holli
Abstract: The research that has validated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as an effective treatment with adolescents has used standardized DBT with the specified modifications for adolescents. The modifications have generally followed Linehan’s original model. However, not all therapists using DBT are adhering to the standardized DBT model (DiGiorgio, Glass, & Arnkoff, 2010). Additionally, there is minimal research in the literature regarding the specific components of DBT that therapists are using. The purpose of this study was to explore the components of DBT that therapists are using with adolescents and to identify any correlations between training received and therapists’ use of DBT with adolescents. Researchers used a mixed methods exploratory design. Nine therapists using DBT with adolescents in the Sacramento region were recruited through a snowball sample to participate in this study. The findings suggest that not all participants who report that they are using DBT in their practice with adolescents are using all of the components of standardized DBT.
