Title: The archeological concept of Field House
Author: Sutton, Mark Q.
Abstract: In Southwestern archeology Field Houses are given different terms and labels. These different functional labels convey different meanings and interpretations. A "farmhouse" could be interpreted as a different functional unit than a "ranch house", or a "country home". All of these labels, and others with other meanings, are used to refer to the Field House. The concept of the Field House is important for Sinagua population and settlement pattern studies. This problem specifically relates to the role of the Field House in settlement pattern studies and also the inclusion of sites, classed as Field Houses, in population estimates. Traditional views include Field Houses in the total number of sites used to formulate population estimates while newer viewpoints reject the use of Field Houses as sites to be counted in population estimates.
