Title: Discipline in special education: a guide to manifestation determinations and alternatives to suspension

Abstract: The process of disciplining students with disabilities can be overwhelming given the amount of laws and regulations surrounding the procedure. Oftentimes, school administrators, teachers and parents do not have a full understanding of the school’s authority and a student's rights as provided by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). The purpose of this project is provide educators, as well as parents, with resources and best practices for administering discipline procedures for student with disabilities. More specifically, participants and readers will be presented with specific procedures for conducting manifestation determinations within special education. In addition, readers will receive brief information regarding alternatives to suspension and expulsion.
