Title: Puzzling evidence: reflections on the space of photography
Author: Lanning, Mark Thomas
Abstract: This paper is a reflection on my development and work to date. I address questions concerning the formation and evolution of my documentary style approach. The paper is constructed on the premise of Lewis Baltz’s suggestion that photography is a discipline whose true position may reside between the novel and film. I explore that suggestion in the context of my own artistic evolution with reference to Walker Evans, Balzac, Henri Lefebvre, and Aristotle, among others.
